Hay blev grundlagt i 2002, og deres møbelkollektion blev lanceret på Imm Köln i 2003. Ambitionen bag Hay var at opfordre dansk møbeldesign til at vende tilbage til den innovative storhedstid, det havde i 1950’erne og 1960’erne, men i en kontekst, der passer til nutiden. Det blev et koncept, som hurtigt blev meget populært over hele verden.
